Didn't Garmin first start marketing the 45 back in 1998 or 1997?

btw, I just traded an old pressure cooker for a much newer model, the Garmin
eTrex.

nice try, though.

Garmin has added some bells and whistles to its line of model 72's and 76's,
which are basically outgrowths of the model 45 and 48. The real question in
GPS selection, IMHO, is does the unit do what you need it to do, how easy is it
to use underway, can it stand up to the marine environment, and is it
affordable? The model 45 gets a thumbs up in all these categories.

I recently traded an old pressure cooker for an eTrex. For a Garmin 45 and
enough batteries to keep it running for a week, I'd trade an old frying pan,
you pick up the shipping both ways.

The eTrex is currently in production, while the 45 is long out of it.

Practical Sailor states that there is really no place on a boat for an eTrex.
I suppose Jaxshby uses his to help him find himself around the kitchen whilst
using that old pressure cooker....

nah, the dude is just trying to joker someone into paying a couple hundred
dollars for an obsolete, battery hog Model 45 he maybe picked up at a tag sale
for $4.

(I use the eTrex as backup on my boat and it works just fine. That older
stuff, as above, just plain uses tooooooooooooooooooooooooooo many batteries to
be useful even as backup.)

Is it too big for your boat? Does it not work on the water?
Does it not provide a fix?

This unit cost $300 when I bought it new. It just sold for $75 and it works
just as well now as it did when new. This is a bargain for a quality piece
that does everthing a GPS is supposed to do, and more. Jax traded pots and
pans for a cheap eTrex so that says a lot about his acumen.

His comment about battery life is equally uninformed. This unit typically runs
20 hrs or more on four ordinary and inexpensive AA batteries. But most
sailors just plug the unit into the ship's battery and never worry about it.
My guess is that Jax doesn't have a ship battery, or a boat for that matter.
His realm is the scullery....

What a sad state of affairs. If you sleep well at night, P.T.Barnum would love
you.

Yes, it does.

btw, the eTrex is still in production, while the 45 is so obsolete that the
manufacturer stopped making it long ago.

$75 is about $70 more than the unit is worth, to a knowledgeable sailor.

and that cable for that obsolete unit is *how* much?

and never worry about it.

Because they can't see the unit in the cockpit then? Unless, of course, the
boat is little as in tiny and no one really needs gps anyway.

My guess is
that Jax doesn't have a ship battery, or a boat for that matter.

HONK! Wrong answer. Try again.

Well, I do have a butane stove (excellent for a quick cup of coffee, about two
minutes for boiling water), an alcohol/sterno SeaSwing stove (found brand new
at an antique store, and to be used when the weather gets rougher), a
two-burner propane stove, another pressure cooker, a stainless steel insulated
French Press coffeemaker, frying pans, a Braun mixer/chopper, sauce pan, and
wine glasses.

And you? What do you have on your 22 foot Boston Whaler besides a couple
obsolete gps's, a lead acid battery to run them, a chartplotter, a liferaft,
two 406 EPIRBs and a frying pan with a broken handle?

Sleep well at night, do you?

Fact: I sleep well at night

Fact: People trust me before, during and after a business transaction

Fact: I wouldn't trade more than an old frying pan for an old Model 45

Fact: Garmin thinks so little of the Model 45 it stopped making it years ago.

Fact: Garmin thinks the eTrex has sufficient value so as to continue to produce
it

Fact: I traded an old pressure cooker for an eTrax. Each of use were and are
satisified.

Fact: I got the eTrex as backup.

Fact: I would trade an old frying pan for an old Garmin 45 with enough
batteries to keep it running for a week, *IF* I needed more backup gps.

Fact: I haven't blocked my email address so as to preclude offline discussion

writes thusly:

Hey Know-Nothing:

Most people keep their mouths shut when they don't have the facts. But not
you. You know everything, right? So here is the challenge: You post the
capabilities of the eTex and I'll post the capabilities of the Garmin 45.
Let's just compare the facts about these two units and let them speak for
themselves. Facts, not uninformed crap like you have been posting.

My guess is that you aren't interested in facts, only running off your
uninformed mouth. My guess is that you have no friends because you are an
argumentative asshole who always has to have the last word. And the people in
your life have your number, don't they? Don't they?

So go for it, and let's see who has the last (factual) word.
