The acute embarrassment the children felt was due to the stupidity of the guides, not the figurehead. Gotta love tolerance and respect for those with different views... Typical of the arrogance of the intolerant. "Chris Brady" wrote in message om... Dutch tall ship causes acute embarrassment to school-children. During a visit to South Street Seaport Museum in New York, the Dutch-built tall ship "Stad Amsterdam" caused much embarrassment to the young folk of the city with its figurehead. In an episode very reminiscent of "boobgate" ( http://www.google.com/search?sourcei...ent&q=Boobgate ) school children had to be diverted away from the front end of the ship lest they should catch sight of it's traditional figurehead - a young woman with flowing hair and BARE breasts. As reported: "The painted figure on the bow of the ship, a woman with long red hair in a green dress with one breast bared, caused a stir when the ship docked in, where the ship's publicity staff had to divert a group of schoolchildren so they would not pass by it." This is what the fuss was all about: http://www.stadamsterdam.com/en/partners/partners.asp Such figureheads are of course entirely traditional for tall ships - amounting to a harmless pagan offering to ensure calm seas and following winds, and indeed have always been so for hundreds of years. And in the Netherlands a naked female figurehead would have caused no concern whatsoever. Unfortunately in a country where the moral right reigns supreme such a sight was certainly not acceptable and as widely reported the school children had to be directed away from such a scandalous sight. But this does beggar the imagination as to what the sailors of old, who used to dock their ships at US ports and ports around the world, would have made of all this. Their prime concern after a voyage would have been to visit the local brothels where they would have seen much more than the bare breasts of the local women!! Was Ashcroft one of the students? "Ashcroft" and "students" in the same sentence reminds me of a joke: Attorney General Ashcroft is visiting an elementary school. After a brief speech, he announces, "All right, boys and girls, now you can ask me questions." A young boy named Bobby raises his hand and says, "I have three questions: 1. How did Bush win the election with fewer votes than Gore? 2. Why are you using the USA Patriot Act to limit Americans' civil liberties and violate the Constitution? 3. Why hasn't the U.S. caught Osama Bin Laden yet?" Just then the recess bell sounds and all the kids run out to the playground. After recess, the kids come back to class and Ashcroft says, "I'm sorry we were interrupted. Now you can continue with your questions." A young girl raises her hand and says, "I have two questions: 1. How come the recess bell went off 20 minutes early? 2. Where's Bobby?" |

The original comment about a wooden tit was made by a Dutch member. Holland
has troops in Iraq as part of the Coalition. How does that make him a coward? And what does talking about America's sudden inclination for Puritanical beliefs being enforced on a hundred year old ship have to do with the war in Iraq? All of the shows on TV do nothing but emphasize sex. Children are having babies in their early teens because of this constant influence. Yet, items from our history that have substantial meaning and no sexual connotation whatsoever must now be censored...? Isn't this a bit hypocritical...? Also, wasn't the US founded on the belief that everyone has their own say? Internet boards such as this are terrific for that. It also allows for the meshing of cultures and the better understanding of viewpoints. Yet, it appears now that everyone can have their say, so long as it coincides with what the majority of people "think" they believe based upon what the media feels like reporting that day, in a sensationalistic and not factual approach, of course. Don't you think it is ironic that a Congressional investigation was launched and convened quicker for Janet Jackson's pierced tit than the one needed about false intelligence surrounding 9-11...??? So are you claiming that statues, figureheads, and other artwork should be
covered because you find it offensive? I find this amusing because on Sunday I took my 8 year old daughter to a performance of the Shanghai Circus at Boston's Symphony Hall. My daughter and her friend giggled a bit when they noticed the nude statues, male and female, that line the walls, but otherwise paid little attention to them. Are you claiming that the statues should be clothed? Would you walk out if you went there for a performance? Do you want your children's teachers to tell them that such things are offensive and should be avoided? Frankly, reading your posts I have no idea what you are saying, except you seem offended by something. "Backyard Renegade" wrote in message Irrelevant, but I guess you sounded good to yourself. Frankly, reading your posts I have no idea what you are saying, except you seem offended by something. ** ** a relevant joke ** ** Dear Dr. Laura... On her US radio show recently, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative: Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. ... End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Law and how to follow them. 1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? 2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? 3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. 4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? 5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. The passage clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? 6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination? 7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? 8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die? 9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? 10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/poly). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging. Your adoring fan, |
