New tall ship adventure drama on BBC 2
To the Ends of the Earth Wed 6 Jul, 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm 90mins Rites of Passage Young aristocrat Edmund Talbot embarks on a long and hazardous sea journey from England to Australia on an ancient, decrepit 18th-century wooden warship in this darkly comic film of William Golding's prize winning novel. The ship is crammed with a disparate assortment of officers, sailors and passengers like Talbot and poor emigrants who jostle in the crammed ship. The voyage is rough and shattering, relentless and tedious. Out of monotony and tedium there grows a need for distraction and mischief. Edmund is drawn to one of the few available women, the flirtatious Zenobia. Partly to impress her, he arrogantly champions the case of a ridiculed fellow passenger, Parson Colley, little knowing the dire consequences which will result when shame is a force deadlier than the sea itself. Contains strong language. Stereo Widescreen Website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/totheendsoftheearth/ Note - no tall ships were used or harmed in any way during the making of this three part series - they were all mockup sets - constructed by the riggers from the Cutty Sark. Even the ropes were especially made since none could be found to purchase. They obviously didn't try Square Sail or Chatham Historic Dockyard, etc. |
