Carpel Tunnel
About 2 years ago we had a short thread on Carpel Tunnel and paddling and
some exercises to help relieve the pain, numbness, etc. I'm just wondering how / if people had any success in improving their condition? Regards Roger. |
Carpel Tunnel
Hi,
There really are no good exercises for relief of carpal tunnel impingement. One thing you might try is wrist splints at night. They keep your wrists mildly extended and are some benefit for some people. The only real fix is a good neurosurgeon to do a carpal tunnel release. Having worked in the neurosurgery field for over 20 years I've seen a lot of this and a good surgeon is about the only long term solution. That and if you have carpal tunnel syndrome don't paddle with a feathered paddle, it will only aggravate it. Bub |
Carpel Tunnel
I had carpel tunnel in both wrists several years back and was wearing wrist
braces at night because the pain would be so bad. My hands would often go numb from time to time too. It turned out I was over gripping my paddle and that's what caused it for me. Since I mainly paddle whitewater I knew I wasn't going to stop over gripping so I went from a straight shaft to a bent shaft paddle staying at 45 degrees and the carpel tunnel went away in about 4 months. Since I have smaller hands and there are more option in paddles now a days I've since gone to a small shaft bent shaft and that has really relieved much of my over gripping. Courtney |

Regards Roger. Find a good physical therapist and they can show you some basic exercises to minimize symptoms, but it seems to only help with milder cases. |
