$500? Yikes. No.
Take a look at the top three options on this page: http://www.prolineracks.com/hitch-mount-boat-racks.html and add a single bar to the roof of your cab (Thule or Yakima half-packs are like $100-$130). Add a couple of cradles and straps, and you should still be under $300. That would be the max you'd need to spend. (If you go with a cheap foam cradle strapped directly to your roof, you might get under $200, but the roof bar is much more versatile). Friend transported a 18' sea kayak up and back from oregon to socal for all of no cash outlay on an extended cab chevy s10. Said he had zero troubles with the rig. Pat |
