I've got an old Aquaterra Chinook that I want to sell, but I have no
idea what it's worth. It hasn't been in the water since '03, and the bottom is a bit crazed, however I'm sure it's still seaworthy. I bought it used around '95 for $800. It's seen a lot of use, but it's been taken care of. I live near a college campus, so I don't think I'll have a problem selling it. I'm including 2-section paddle, 2 sprayskirts and a pump. Any suggestions how much I should ask for it? |

You could take a look at eBay and at least get a ballpark number. If you are going to run a newspaper ad (or whatever) there is always the "$1,000,000 or best offer" approach. As a friend who was selling most of a sports car at the time once told me when I commented on his asking price, "I can always come down."

Even though the Chinook is somewhat of a classic (I believe it was pretty much the first polyethelene touring kayak), given the oilcanning (have you tried fixing that), you're probably not going to get much more than $400 for the package. |

Its a nice old boat. Does it have a large front hatch on the tiny screw
out one? We have 2 of them. I know what we paid for them new but I suspect they are likely worth a lot less now. Likely 17 or 18 years old it must be approaching the point where the sun has done a little damage. I would not think about paying more that $700.00 for one and wear as well as time have worked on it so $500.00 may be fair to everyone. It would be a fabulous beginners boat. |

I'm in Appleton, Wisconsin.
I haven't tried fixing the "oilcanning." How do you do that? With a heat gun? I've heard of using petex to fix scratches. Don't know if I want to spend the time tho. It has the smaller screw hatch. I recon I'll start with $500 OBO. My plan is to mount it on a car rack, slap on a 4-Sale sign, and go park it on campus. Thanks for the advice everyone! |

Its one of the older boats , like mine.
Oil caning , put it in a cradle of some kind and pour hot water into it. Gravity will draw the bends down to where they should be. I have friends that use that kayak a lot. One guy owns a dealership for competing manufacturers line but he and his wife still paddle chinooks. Good luck Alex |
